She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. After being disappointed in journalistic work by the assignments she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. From this position she started her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
